New Classifications. GameRefinery's service now includes specific classifications for emerging game modes and thematic elements.
The February 2019 feature update provides an overview of new analytical classifications added to the GameRefinery service, specifically focusing on emerging game modes and thematic elements within the mobile gaming market. The primary purpose of these updates is to enhance the granularity of game intelligence tools, allowing developers and publishers to better track and categorize specific gameplay mechanics and aesthetic themes across a wide range of titles.
The updates introduce two distinct gameplay modes: Battle Royale and MOBA. The Battle Royale classification identifies games featuring survival-based, last-man-standing mechanics within a shrinking play area. The MOBA classification identifies titles that incorporate team-based arena combat, where players work to destroy an opposing base while developing character attributes throughout a match. These categories are designed to capture both dedicated titles and secondary modes integrated into broader game genres, such as MMORPGs.
Additionally, the update expands thematic tagging to include three categories: Warfare (Historic/Fantasy), Warfare (Modern/Sci-fi), and Maritime. These classifications distinguish games based on their military or seafaring focus, providing a clearer framework for analyzing market trends in setting and narrative design. By requiring specific gameplay elements—such as active seafaring for the Maritime tag—the service ensures that these categories remain precise and actionable for industry professionals. These additions reflect a broader effort to standardize the tracking of complex, multi-genre mobile game features, facilitating more accurate competitive benchmarking and market research for studios and publishers.
