The Foundation expects actual participation to be lower, which could increase the per-capita funding for approved nations.
The Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) has announced the structural framework and funding details for the 2026 Esports Nations Cup (ENC), a global tournament featuring national teams. The initiative aims to foster sustainability and professional growth within the esports ecosystem by establishing a formal system for international representation. The EWCF has earmarked $20 million USD to support national team programs, covering travel, logistics, and promotional activities.
The competition utilizes a "National Team Partner" model, requiring entities—such as sports federations, organizations, or qualified individuals—to undergo a rigorous, multi-stage evaluation process to gain official recognition. These partners are responsible for managing regional qualifiers, coordinating with publishers, and overseeing national team operations. While over 200 countries and territories are eligible to participate, the EWCF anticipates that actual participation will be lower, potentially increasing the per-capita funding available to approved teams. The final tournament is scheduled to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in November 2026.
Applications for National Team Partners are open through January 31, 2026. The selection process prioritizes governance standards, operational capability, and community reach. Notably, while individual players from Russia may compete, they are prohibited from representing their national flag, and Iran has been excluded from the event. The project has faced external scrutiny from international human rights organizations regarding the broader context of Saudi Arabian state-backed investments in global sports and entertainment.
