The escapED framework serves as a robust, adaptable methodology for the design of educational escape rooms, specifically those addressing complex social issues such as human rights, modern slavery, and human trafficking. By applying this framework to the development of ten distinct educational experiences, designers have demonstrated that structured game design can effectively balance gameplay mechanics with pedagogical goals. The primary objective of this approach is to foster both knowledge acquisition and emotional engagement, transforming abstract social challenges into immersive, interactive learning environments.
Empirical evidence from 215 participants confirms the high efficacy of this methodology, with 97.67% of users reporting significant enjoyment and 90.67% validating the games as successful educational tools. The research indicates that these experiences are particularly adept at eliciting empathy and improving understanding of sensitive topics. While the foundational framework provides a necessary structure, the development process benefits significantly from an agile, iterative approach. Incorporating tools such as game flow diagrams and continuous testing allows designers to refine puzzle logic and narrative pacing, ensuring that the final product remains both functional and intellectually stimulating.
Ultimately, the study establishes that educational escape rooms are viable instruments for social change when designed with a flexible, research-backed methodology. The findings suggest that while the escapED framework is a reliable starting point, its true value lies in its capacity to be adapted through iterative refinement and post-session debriefings. Future efforts should focus on expanding this model to diverse formats, such as portable escape-room-in-a-box kits, and conducting longitudinal studies to measure the long-term retention of the knowledge and attitudes cultivated during these sessions.
