Discord announced a significant reduction in its global workforce in January 2024, cutting approximately 17% of its staff, which equates to roughly 170 employees. This decision follows a smaller round of layoffs in August 2023, where 4% of the workforce was let go. The primary driver for these cuts, as articulated by CEO Jason Citron, was the need to address operational inefficiencies resulting from rapid expansion. Since 2020, the company’s headcount had increased fivefold, leading to an overextension of projects and a loss of organizational focus.
The company maintains a stable financial position, holding approximately $700 million in cash from $1 billion in total investments. While Discord has previously considered an initial public offering, current leadership indicates that such plans are not imminent. To support the departing staff, the company provided a severance package including five months of salary, additional tenure-based pay, five months of benefits, and three months of outplacement services, alongside continued healthcare coverage through the end of 2024.
These layoffs occurred within a broader trend of contraction across the technology and gaming sectors during early 2024. Discord’s restructuring coincided with significant workforce reductions at other major industry players, including Amazon’s Twitch and Prime divisions, as well as Google. The move reflects a wider industry pivot toward cost-efficiency and streamlined operations following the aggressive hiring cycles observed during the preceding years.
