Total revenue reached $6.6 billion, representing a 12.4% decline year-over-year.
Diablo Immortal achieved significant financial success in August 2022, securing a position among the top ten highest-grossing mobile games globally. The title generated $97 million in revenue across iOS and Android platforms, representing a 42% increase compared to the previous month. This growth is largely attributed to the game’s late-July launch in the Chinese market, which accounted for 61% of total player spending, followed by the United States at 16%.
These findings, based on data from Sensor Tower, highlight the game's commercial performance despite widespread criticism regarding its monetization model. The title has faced backlash for its pay-to-win mechanics, with some estimates suggesting that fully upgrading a character requires an investment exceeding $500,000. While Blizzard leadership has defended the monetization structure by noting that such costs only apply to endgame content and that most players do not spend money, the approach has drawn public scrutiny from industry peers regarding the prioritization of revenue KPIs over player experience.
The broader mobile gaming landscape experienced a contraction during this period, with the global market generating $6.6 billion in August, a 12.4% decline year-over-year. The United States led global player spending at 28%, followed by Japan at 20% and China at 17.4%. Other top-performing titles during the month included Tencent’s Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile, which maintained their dominance in the global rankings.
