Independent game developers frequently encounter significant obstacles when designing Heads-Up Displays, primarily due to a lack of accessible, actionable, and genre-specific UX frameworks. While academic literature provides foundational knowledge for high-budget action titles, it often fails to address the resource constraints and practical requirements of independent studios. This research establishes a new set of empirically grounded guidelines specifically tailored to the racing genre, aiming to bridge the gap between theoretical UX principles and the realities of independent production.
The development of these guidelines involved a two-part evaluation process, including interviews with 16 independent developers to identify systemic failures in current industry resources. Participants consistently reported that existing materials are hindered by overly academic language, a lack of visual examples, and poor organizational structures that make implementation difficult. By addressing these shortcomings, the study produced a refined prototype that emphasizes genre-specific recommendations and practical checklists. This new approach received significantly higher ratings for relevance and convenience compared to traditional resources, demonstrating that developers prioritize utility and clarity over abstract design theory.
These findings underscore a critical need for more specialized, evidence-based design tools within the independent sector. By moving away from generic recommendations toward structured, actionable frameworks, developers can improve player immersion and overall satisfaction. Future efforts will focus on expanding these guidelines to encompass a broader range of game genres and platforms, while increasing the sample size to ensure the scalability and long-term validity of these design standards across the global independent game industry.
