Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported strong growth for the first-half period ended September 30, 2009, driven by significant organizational restructuring and the acquisition of Eidos Ltd. Net sales reached 90,561 million yen, representing a 33.2% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Operating income also saw a robust rise of 39.3% to 13,091 million yen. However, net income declined by 55.7% to 2,683 million yen, largely due to costs associated with business restructuring and acquisition-related expenses.
The company’s performance was anchored by the Games segment, which saw net sales surge by 117.5% to 48,444 million yen, bolstered by the release of major titles such as Dragon Quest IX and Batman: Arkham Asylum. Conversely, the Amusement segment faced challenges, with net sales falling 20.5% to 25,853 million yen as the arcade facility market remained stagnant. Other segments showed mixed results; the Publication segment grew by 27.4% due to successful comic and strategy guide sales, while the Merchandising segment experienced a notable 90.0% increase in sales, supported by the release of Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete.
Geographically, the company expanded its international footprint, with overseas sales rising to 24.5% of total consolidated sales, up from 17.6% in the prior year. This growth was supported by the integration of Eidos Ltd., which expanded the company's operational reach in North America and Europe. The company maintained its full-year projections, anticipating net sales of 180,000 million yen and net income of 10,000 million yen, reflecting a strategic focus on strengthening its core business segments under the holding company structure established in late 2008.
