Tencent recorded 636 million hours watched, significantly outperforming other Chinese publishers in the first quarter of 2024.
Chinese game publishers are currently navigating a complex landscape defined by regulatory uncertainty, shifting consumer preferences, and a drive toward technological innovation. Despite concerns regarding government oversight on in-game spending and gaming addiction, major publishers continue to maintain a significant global presence through popular esports titles, mobile games, and gacha-based experiences. The industry remains heavily concentrated, with Tencent leading the market by a wide margin, followed by companies like Moonton and miHoYo.
Performance data from the first quarter of 2024 highlights the dominance of multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) titles, which account for three of the top five games by Chinese publishers. League of Legends leads this category with 478 million hours watched, bolstered by professional esports leagues. Mobile gaming remains a critical growth vector, evidenced by the success of titles like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and PUBG Mobile. Additionally, gacha games such as Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail maintain strong viewership, demonstrating the resilience of these monetization models despite regulatory pressures.
To address concerns regarding creative stagnation, major publishers are increasingly investing in artificial intelligence to streamline development and enhance gameplay. Tencent, in particular, has integrated generative AI through its Hunyuan model and the GiiNEX Game AI Engine to automate tasks such as procedural dialogue generation, 3D environment creation, and reinforcement learning for NPC combatants. By diversifying into new genres like sports and leveraging AI-driven efficiencies, Chinese publishers are attempting to maintain their competitive edge against international rivals while adapting to a volatile domestic regulatory environment.
