Stream Hatchet
Korean platforms Chzzk and SOOP combined account for 17.5% of viewership, collectively outpacing Twitch’s 8.8% share.
VTubing has evolved from a niche Japanese subculture into a significant force within the global live-streaming industry. The primary thesis is that virtual creators, who utilize motion-capture avatars to perform, have cultivated highly devoted fanbases that offer unique value to brands and publishers. This format has experienced rapid growth, with VTuber content accounting for 7% of total hours watched on Twitch and YouTube Gaming by late 2025, effectively doubling its market share since 2023.
The analysis is based on a sample of the top 100 VTubers by hours watched between September 2025 and August 2026. Data indicates that YouTube remains the dominant platform for this content, capturing 73.7% of total hours watched, while Korean platforms like Chzzk and SOOP have emerged as significant players, collectively outpacing Twitch’s 8.8% share. The industry is heavily influenced by major agencies such as Hololive and Nijisanji, which manage talent through idol-style structures, though independent creators and those from smaller, specialized agencies are increasingly finding success.
Content strategy among top VTubers centers on collaborative, open-ended games like Minecraft and GTA V, which facilitate shared storytelling. However, peak viewership is typically driven by milestone events, such as anniversaries and creator-led competitive tournaments, rather than routine gameplay. These events generate high levels of audience engagement, which, combined with the organic amplification provided by fan communities, makes VTubers attractive partners for long-term brand sponsorships. As the technology becomes more accessible, the sector is expected to continue diversifying, solidifying its position as a mainstream component of the digital entertainment landscape.
