Distilling the key insights…
Capcom’s consolidated financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010, reflect a period of growth driven by strong demand for home video games, particularly in overseas markets. Despite a flat broader economic environment, the company reported net sales of 19,497 million yen, a 19.2% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Operating income also rose by 23.0% to 3,664 million yen. However, net income for the quarter declined by 6.4% to 2,230 million yen, partially due to a year-over-year decrease in foreign exchange gains.
The home video game segment served as the primary growth engine, with net sales increasing 36.0% to 14,148 million yen. Key titles such as Resident Evil 5 and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite contributed significantly to these results, benefiting from a global consumer shift toward at-home entertainment. Conversely, the arcade games sales segment struggled, reporting a net loss of 168 million yen due to market stagnation and reduced purchasing power among operators. The contents expansion segment also faced challenges, recording an operating loss of 65 million yen as the pachislo machine business remained in an early, underdeveloped stage.
Geographically, the company saw a substantial expansion in its international footprint. Overseas sales accounted for 40.4% of total consolidated net sales, up from 21.7% in the prior year’s first quarter. This shift was supported by strategic initiatives such as the CAPTIVATE 2009 press event in Monaco. As of June 30, 2009, the company maintained a solid financial position with total assets of 94,185 million yen and a shareholders' equity ratio of 64.4%. Management has maintained its full-year earnings forecast, projecting net sales of 95,000 million yen and net income of 8,500 million yen for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010.
