Create free accounthello welcome to biz daily I'm John Jordan so the new talking about the day is Apple TV again so we took quite a battle TV last week and it seemed like that's the news that kind of keeps on giving so there's lots of excited developers at the moment who've been awarded or just been told by Apple they've been awarded a game development kits effectively an Apple TV and then the software development kit that goes with it in the controller and so they were getting very excited about the games they're going to put on the Apple TV and of course that in its own turn is kind of a correct rating or some kind of interesting kind of rumor and counter immorally so there's been an interesting things today about people saying what controllers you have to support so there was some people are saying could you just make a game that just supported a
third party kind of traditional kind of console controller because we know the Apple TV will support certain types of their pi controller and reading through the apple kind of release notes and saying now you can sew on the only controller you can assume you can hit with apple TV is the remote control because clearly that's remote control is bundled with the Apple TV and the apple TV controller is Michael we cut a motion controller that's anything you can assume you've got and there's some developers have said they think that's really good because that kind of makes that's a different kind of control scheme so it means if you make a game just for Apple TV and just for that kind of controller that's the government but potentially if they sell a lot of Apple TVs as a big niche so um it's an interesting thing and people being some people have been complaining about them there's two hundred megabyte kind of file size download and there's technical odds and ends that people could have like developers like arguing about but certainly general they're all very excited them the getting of the ones who are least getting their hands on
development kit and we've been looking against a boom a high level look kind of the games are being now so it pretty much seems now but there's going to be a lot of games coming up Apple TV and it's gonna be a ninja to kind of clear coat for the obvious types of games so one is people going to be remaking their old games there have been now on iOS for a while making a papal TV so seen a few developers are placed bringing over like four or five games and re kind of really engineer that would you be will that work they're going to tell me we've had on mobile magnums what kind of industry experts debating this question and actually I mean they're quite a skeptical punchy and it have proved to be the point that most them were they kind of like Apple TV they kind of kind of kind of early adopter type people they believed by the kit and play around with it because their game developers they're not quite sure what the mark is going to be it up which will how big the mop is going to be there are few who were very keen on it and just thought anything kind of did we anything happened it would be very impressive and
there were some that were kind of impressed that it would be the best on console micro console out there but no there's still not a big argument about whether that kind of type of hardware works at all so a is the famous one earn them more kind of hard core focus and just didn't work then fine audience so maybe Apple TV Bolivia Kettleman audits for that or will they be just happier playing a cross t-bird on their on their iPhone across the globe multiplayer mean something so that's the other interesting thing I guess cross the flame operation and you gay but it's a you'll be exclusive mode for Apple TV so that's the thing that's really going to drive people I think and that's really awfully what Apple are going to be focusing on is people making new games for Apple TV and the and the come interesting sub kind of a section of that really is those kind of games look like they're all gonna be paid games so we were in touch with one developer burrito from this because we'd said their games when you're free to play and they said we're not announce what what what are we going for yet which clearly
suggests there's not going for free to play all those they would look up of complaint so I think obviously the Apple tea leaving new device and it being a feel expensive kind of piece of hardware I mean tilt or a dollars 100 hundred fifty dollars have not impulse buy and awfully if you're having some flipping TV through or buying films throughout their paid so clearly in the opening stages at least people gonna be hoping for games can be a paid platform where that's going to kill of it create a new kind of a new type of ecosystem that small developers and people who can't deal with the kind of analytical and operational demands of free-to-play games they can go back to maybe you know kind of had the app store once was many years ago now and put some paid game through there and actually because they're on a TV and be charged with more for them so maybe we'll see like five ten dollar games going through the upper TV of course this is all subjects objection subject yet at the moment because there's not been any equity visit out Elliott and Apple haven't announced anything about the App Store
and obviously free-to-play games presumably will be allowed to be made available through apple TV just be interesting with this new opportunity we kind of suggests that most developers are going to at least try to begin to have a more paid approach so that's interesting i think in general we see lots of power moves in the industry to try and deal with free to play which which works very well for the super cells and kings of this world are not very well for most other developers so we're seeing with amazon as well in a scientific approach it's all kind of to do with the key how can we can I keep the industry growing how can we keep things exciting while the free-to-play market is kind of saturated and kind of hard to get into so that's news today come back tomorrow we'll be talking about hopefully something different than Apple TV but come back and find out they'll see that
Apple TV represents a potential shift in the gaming landscape, offering a platform that may move away from the dominant free-to-play (F2P) model prevalent on mobile devices toward a more traditional paid-game ecosystem. Developers are currently evaluating the hardware’s viability, driven by the distribution of development kits and the unique constraints of the platform, such as the mandatory support for the bundled motion-sensitive remote control. While some developers are porting existing iOS titles, the industry is closely watching whether the device can foster a new market for premium, paid experiences priced between five and ten dollars.
The primary challenge for Apple TV lies in consumer adoption and the uncertainty surrounding its target audience. Industry experts remain divided; while some view the hardware as a high-quality micro-console, others question whether it can succeed where previous attempts at similar hardware have failed to gain traction. The platform’s success may hinge on its ability to offer exclusive content or seamless cross-platform play that differentiates it from the convenience of smartphone gaming. Furthermore, technical limitations, such as a 200-megabyte download cap, present immediate hurdles for developers accustomed to larger file sizes.
Ultimately, Apple TV is being positioned as a potential refuge for smaller developers who struggle with the complex analytical and operational demands of the saturated F2P market. By providing a living-room environment where users are already accustomed to paid transactions for media, the platform offers a strategic opportunity to revitalize the paid-app model. Although Apple has yet to finalize App Store policies for the device, the current industry sentiment suggests a collective desire to explore alternative monetization strategies that could sustain a broader range of developers beyond the industry’s largest players.
