The Video Games Federation Belgium's "Belgian Games Key Facts 2022" (published as the 2023 edition) provides an overview of the videogame sector in Belgium and Europe, covering market value, player demographics, development, esports, parental oversight, and social engagement topics such as education, inclusion, and climate. The report's core aim is to show the economic weight of videogames in Belgium while also documenting how people play and how parents manage gaming. Its figures primarily refer to 2022, with comparisons to 2021 and the pre-pandemic year 2019.
On the economic side, the total value of videogames in Belgium was reported at €582 million in 2022, a decline of 3 percent from 2021 but a 10 percent increase over 2019. Belgian videogame development employed 1,085 full-time equivalents across 133 companies, and mobile game downloads reached roughly 148 million, about one million more than the previous year. Among playing habits, 53 percent of the population aged 6 to 64 play videogames, with an average of 8.8 hours per week, and female players make up 46.7 percent of the total player base. Esports exposure stood at 66 percent of Belgians aged 16 to 65, with 21 percent reporting that they regularly consume esports content.
The parental section draws on a 2023 study by DVJ Insights commissioned by the federation, which found that 98 percent of parents have visibility into their children's in-game spending, 96 percent have agreements with their children about when and how long they play, and 74 percent use parental control tools. The report is based on a mix of sources, including the GameTrack consumer survey, Games Sales Data, AppMagic, Deloitte, and European Union audiovisual data, and its data may be reproduced with attribution.
