Pre-ordering ensures access to titles on their official release date.
Pre-ordering computer and video games has become a significant consumer behavior in Germany, with approximately 9 million individuals—representing one in four gamers—securing titles prior to their official release. This trend is driven by a desire to guarantee day-one access and obtain exclusive incentives, such as limited collector’s editions, soundtracks, and art books. The findings indicate that online channels are the primary method for these transactions, with 23 percent of gamers utilizing digital platforms for pre-orders, compared to only 4 percent who rely on traditional brick-and-mortar retail stores.
The broader landscape of game distribution in Germany reflects a shifting preference toward digital consumption. In 2015, downloads accounted for 33 percent of all PC and console titles purchased and 21 percent of total consumer expenditure. Digital platforms are particularly dominant for lower-priced titles, as 71 percent of all download purchases consist of games priced at 20 euros or less. Conversely, full-price releases and premium collector’s editions remain largely the domain of physical retail outlets.
These insights are based on representative market research conducted by GfK, which surveyed over 2,000 German-speaking internet users aged 14 and older. The data highlights the evolving relationship between German consumers and the games industry, emphasizing the growing importance of digital infrastructure in both pre-order strategies and general sales volume. By facilitating early access and providing convenient, accessible alternatives to physical media, digital platforms have solidified their role as a cornerstone of the modern German gaming market.
