Stream Hatchet
The release of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom serves as a case study for the performance of Nintendo intellectual property on live-streaming platforms. The title achieved 3.4 million hours watched and 100,000 hours of airtime during its debut week, significantly outperforming the 2019 remake of Link’s Awakening. This success is attributed to the game’s innovative Echoes system, which encourages varied, open-ended puzzle-solving that resonates with viewers and creators alike. The viewership was driven by a diverse group of international streamers, including prominent Portuguese-speaking creators and Japanese VTubers from the NIJISANJI group.
Despite the strong performance of individual Zelda titles, Nintendo faces broader challenges regarding the live-streaming presence of its paid Switch catalog. Analysis of the 50 best-selling Switch games over the past 12 months reveals that the most-watched titles, such as Minecraft and Among Us, are not Nintendo-exclusive. Furthermore, Nintendo’s own attempts at online-focused titles, like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Splatoon 3, struggle to maintain the same level of competitive viewership as traditional fighting games or shooters.
Geographically, Nintendo’s paid Switch library remains heavily dependent on the Japanese market, which accounts for nearly half of all viewership when non-exclusive titles are excluded. To remain competitive and reach a broader, younger audience, the company must address its historical difficulties with online community-building. Future growth may depend on diversifying its streaming audience through global-facing titles, potential partnerships with third-party publishers, and improved online infrastructure in future hardware iterations.
