This marks the first time since its December 2020 launch that no team members are assigned to the project.
The conclusion of development on Cyberpunk 2077 marks the end of a tumultuous three-and-a-half-year lifecycle for the title. By analyzing live-streaming viewership data, the trajectory of the game reveals a pattern of initial hype, significant decline due to technical instability, and a successful multi-stage recovery driven by updates and transmedia expansion. This analysis highlights the resilience of the franchise and the impact of strategic content releases on audience engagement.
The game’s performance on streaming platforms began with a strong debut, recording 74 million hours watched in December 2020. However, widespread technical issues and subsequent removal from digital storefronts led to a sharp decline in viewership. The recovery phase was catalyzed by two major events: the release of a next-gen update in February 2022, which boosted viewership to 1.1 million hours, and the debut of the Netflix series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners in September 2022, which further increased engagement to 2.3 million hours. The title reached its peak post-launch performance in September 2023 with the release of the Phantom Liberty expansion, which generated 14.2 million hours watched.
Following the official announcement that development had ceased, daily viewership dropped to 16.4 thousand hours by May 29, 2024. Despite this decline, the intellectual property has successfully transitioned into a broader franchise. With CD Projekt Red shifting focus toward a sequel, currently codenamed Project Orion, the industry is now looking toward the future of the series to determine if the next installment can sustain or exceed the viewership benchmarks established by the original title.
