UKGF Portfolio Update and News: September 2026

The UK Games Fund announced its latest cohort of funded companies in September 2026, presenting the intake as evidence of the strength, creativity and commercial potential of the UK's independent games sector. The update follows the reopening of applications earlier in the year, which drew sustained interest from independent UK-based studios across the Fund's three routes: Prototype, Content and Starter.

The announcement centers on the Round 20 Prototype Fund recipients, with fifteen companies named: Firebolt Games, Saltstone Studios, Giraffe Head Studios, Buried Things, Patattie Games, Maximalist, Wristwork, Duck Shake, Exabyte Games, Meaning Machine, Future Friends Games, Gibbonix, Evil Twin Artworks, Admiral Egg Games and Valentine Games. Their projects span a range of genres and concepts, including horror puzzle, space mining, word-based, quiz, physics experimentation and cozy or creature-driven games. Recently confirmed Content Fund companies are also part of the portfolio update, though they are not itemized. Fuller project details will be added to the funded companies section later. The Starter Fund 2026 cohort, working across the Head Start and Fresh Start Pathways, is yet to be revealed.

Director Kirsty Gibson framed the response as a sign of creative drive and entrepreneurial ambition, stressing support for companies at different stages as they pursue sustainable growth, further investment and long-term success. Alex Taylor of Wristwork said the funding allows deeper collaboration with UK-based partners, delivering a level of polish and rigor that would otherwise be out of reach.
