The study explores the meanings and forms of value backers attach to their involvement in games crowdfunding.
This study investigates backer motivations for participating in games crowdfunding, moving beyond the simple acquisition of a product to explore deeper forms of value. It utilizes data from an online survey conducted in 2016, which included 426 respondents, with 114 providing qualitative answers to an open-ended question about their reasons for participation. The research adopts a game production studies perspective, aiming to understand the role of backer-players in the independent game ecosystem.
Key findings reveal several thematic motivations. Many backers are driven by the desire for "tailor-made" or unique game products, often seeking early access, better information on development, or exclusive collector's editions. A significant motivation is the enjoyment of following or "spectating" game development through project updates, which fosters a better understanding and appreciation of the creative process. Backer-creator communication is also highly valued, with some respondents emphasizing the importance of vetting creators.
Community building emerged as another important factor, as crowdfunding campaigns offer opportunities to interact with like-minded individuals and collectively influence development. Some participants view crowdfunding as an enjoyable hobby or a philanthropic act, driven by a desire to help bring desired products into reality, support small or independent creators, or foster a better game culture. The study concludes that spectating development represents a newly emerging form of consumption, drawing parallels between crowdfunding engagement and reality television.
