The agreement, effective April 10, 2024, restores access to titles like World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, Hearthstone, and Overwatch 2 for the Chinese market.
Activision Blizzard and NetEase have officially resumed their strategic partnership to distribute Blizzard’s gaming portfolio within mainland China. This reconciliation follows a high-profile dissolution of their business relationship in January 2023, which was primarily driven by disputes over operational compensation and the leadership tenure of former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick. The renewal restores access to major titles, including World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, Hearthstone, and Overwatch 2, for the Chinese market.
The restoration of this partnership is underpinned by the fact that NetEase holds the essential government-approved licensing rights for these titles in China. Re-establishing this connection was viewed as the most viable path for Activision Blizzard to re-enter the region, as securing new government approvals independently could have required a multi-year regulatory process. Furthermore, the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft—which already maintains a successful distribution partnership with NetEase for Minecraft—likely facilitated the negotiations, alongside the departure of leadership figures previously associated with the friction between the two firms.
Operational responsibilities under the renewed agreement are divided between NetEase subsidiaries, with the Thunder Fire Group in Hangzhou managing server operations and the Guangzhou office overseeing customer service. Despite the resumption of service, the status of competitive play remains complex; reports indicate that Chinese professional players face restrictions regarding participation in the Overwatch Champions Series. This highlights the ongoing regulatory and logistical challenges involved in reintegrating these titles into the Chinese esports ecosystem.
