ThatGameCompany, the developer behind titles such as Journey and Sky: Children of the Light, has secured $160 million in a new funding round led by venture capital firms TPG and Sequoia. This significant capital injection is intended to facilitate the expansion of the studio’s development team, infrastructure, and organizational capacity. The investment also marks a strategic milestone with the addition of Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull as a principal advisor, who will provide guidance on creative culture and long-term growth.
The studio plans to utilize these resources to develop new interactive experiences that prioritize human connection through gameplay. CEO Jenova Chen aims to create titles that resonate emotionally with diverse audiences across all ages and backgrounds, drawing a parallel to the genre-defining impact of classic animated feature films. By bridging the gap between cinematic storytelling and interactive gaming, the studio seeks to push the boundaries of artistic expression within the medium.
This funding reflects a broader industry trend where investors are increasingly prioritizing studios with proven track records and unique intellectual properties. Having transitioned successfully from a console-focused developer to a mobile-market innovator with the widespread success of Sky, the studio is now positioned to scale its operations significantly. The infusion of capital underscores the growing confidence in high-quality, emotionally driven game design and highlights the studio's evolution from its early roots in downloadable console content to a major player capable of attracting substantial institutional support.
