Sony’s financial results for the first fiscal quarter of 2024 demonstrate a strategic shift in revenue composition, as robust performance in software and services successfully mitigated a downturn in hardware sales. The Game & Network Services segment reported total revenue of ¥864.9 billion, representing a 12% year-over-year increase, while operating profit rose by 33% to ¥65.2 billion. This growth underscores the company’s ability to leverage its digital ecosystem to maintain profitability despite cooling demand for console hardware.
The primary driver of this financial performance was the software sector, where game sales climbed 19.7% to ¥486.4 billion. Within this category, add-on content accounted for nearly 60% of revenue, followed by digital full-game sales at 29%. Notably, the digital share of total unit sales increased to 80%, up from 72% in the previous year. Additionally, the Network Services subsegment, which includes PlayStation Plus, grew by 28% to reach ¥159.3 billion.
Conversely, hardware performance faced significant headwinds, with revenue declining 21.7% to ¥146.3 billion. PlayStation 5 unit sales dropped by 27.2% year-over-year to 2.4 million units, bringing the console’s total life-to-date sales to 61.7 million. Despite the hardware contraction, the PlayStation Network maintained a strong user base, reporting 116 million monthly active users as of June 30, 2024. This figure represents a notable increase from the 108 million users recorded during the same period in the previous fiscal year, highlighting the sustained engagement of the platform's ecosystem.
