The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has formally blocked Microsoft’s proposed $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, citing significant concerns regarding the impact on the domestic game streaming market. A critical, previously overlooked component of the 418-page final ruling is a 10-year prohibition preventing Microsoft from attempting to merge with or acquire the publisher of major titles such as Call of Duty and Overwatch 2. This measure serves as a standard regulatory safeguard to maintain existing competitive market dynamics, barring any unforeseen changes in circumstances.
The ruling highlights a broader regulatory tension within the global gaming and esports sectors. While the CMA, the European Commission, and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission have scrutinized the Microsoft-Activision deal, they have faced criticism for failing to address other significant consolidations. Specifically, the acquisition of tournament organizers ESL and FACEIT by the Saudi-backed Savvy Games Group, as well as the subsequent purchase of Vindex, occurred without similar regulatory intervention. This has led to concerns that major government watchdogs may lack the necessary expertise to effectively monitor the rapidly evolving esports landscape.
Despite the CMA’s decision, both Microsoft and Activision Blizzard have committed to appealing the ruling. Meanwhile, the acquisition has received regulatory approval in several other jurisdictions, including Japan, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Serbia, Chile, and Ukraine. The situation remains a focal point for industry analysts monitoring the intersection of international antitrust policy and the global consolidation of gaming assets.
