This represents a 53% year-over-year increase for the division. Operating income also rose by 25% during the same period.
Sony’s Game & Network Services (G&NS) division experienced significant financial growth during the third quarter of the 2022 fiscal year, which ended December 31, 2022. The division reported revenue of ¥1.24 trillion ($9.6 billion), representing a 53% year-over-year increase, while operating income rose 25% to ¥116.2 billion ($900 million). This performance was primarily driven by robust PlayStation 5 hardware sales, strong third-party software performance, and favorable foreign exchange rates.
Hardware sales accounted for 48% of the division's total revenue, followed by game software at 42% and network services at 10%. During the quarter, Sony sold 7.1 million PlayStation 5 units, bringing the global total to 32.1 million. Software performance was highlighted by the sale of 86.5 million full game copies, including 20.8 million first-party titles. Notably, the first-party exclusive God of War Ragnarök reached 11 million units sold as of January 22, 2023. Within the software category, digital games and add-on content remained the dominant revenue drivers, comprising 40% and 43% of total game sales, respectively.
Despite the revenue growth, operating income was partially offset by increased costs, including ¥18 billion ($139.4 million) in expenses related to acquisitions completed earlier in the fiscal year. Looking ahead, Sony has raised its full-year fiscal 2022 operating income forecast for the G&NS segment by 7% to ¥240 billion ($1.85 billion), with projected annual revenue of ¥3.6 trillion ($20.1 billion). The results underscore a period of successful hardware scaling and sustained engagement with both first-party and third-party software ecosystems.
