Nintendo has shifted its corporate strategy toward a more aggressive acquisition model, marking a departure from its historical aversion to purchasing external companies. Since 2021, the company has completed five acquisitions in five years, culminating in the recent announcement that it will purchase Bandai Namco Singapore Studios by April 2026. This move is intended to bolster Nintendo’s internal development capacity as it transitions to new hardware cycles and seeks to maintain a consistent output of high-definition software.
The recent acquisition streak, overseen by CEO Shuntaro Furukawa, includes the purchases of Next Level Games, SRD, Dynamo Pictures—rebranded as Nintendo Pictures—and Shiver Entertainment. These transactions reflect a deliberate focus on integrating long-term development partners into the Nintendo Group. By acquiring studios with which it already shares deep operational ties, Nintendo aims to secure essential software development resources and improve production efficiency. The company remains the largest shareholder in Bandai Namco, further underscoring its preference for deepening existing business relationships rather than pursuing large-scale, industry-disrupting mergers.
Industry analysis suggests that these acquisitions are tactical efforts to scale production capabilities to meet the demands of modern gaming, specifically targeting an output of 10 to 12 games per year. While Nintendo possesses the capital to pursue larger acquisitions, its current approach remains highly selective, prioritizing studios that provide incremental value and specialized expertise. This strategy ensures that the company can expand its internal headcount and facilities to support its long-term development roadmap while maintaining its established creative standards.
