Distilling the key insights…
Nintendo’s consolidated financial results for the three months ended June 30, 2015, reflect a return to profitability compared to the same period in the previous year. The company reported net sales of 90.2 billion yen, representing a 20.8% increase year-over-year, and an operating income of 1.1 billion yen, a significant improvement over the 9.5 billion yen operating loss recorded in the first quarter of 2014. Ordinary income reached 14.2 billion yen, bolstered by 10.8 billion yen in foreign exchange gains resulting from the depreciation of the yen. Profit attributable to owners of the parent stood at 8.2 billion yen, contrasting with the 9.9 billion yen loss reported in the prior year.
The performance was driven by the continued expansion of the Nintendo 3DS family, which saw global hardware sales of 1.01 million units and software sales of 7.92 million units. The Wii U platform also contributed to these results, with the title Splatoon achieving 1.62 million units in global sales, helping to revitalize the platform. Additionally, the company noted that favorable sales of amiibo products continued to support revenue growth. Overseas markets remained a critical component of the business, accounting for 72.1% of total net sales.
The company maintains its full-year financial forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016, targeting 570 billion yen in net sales and 50 billion yen in operating income. Future growth strategies focus on the release of key software titles for both the 3DS and Wii U, the continued expansion of the amiibo product lineup, and the planned entry into the smart device gaming market by the end of the calendar year. The financial reporting for this period incorporates updated accounting standards regarding business combinations, though these changes had no material impact on the reported quarterly results.
