Nintendo’s consolidated financial results for the six-month period ending September 30, 2019, demonstrate strong growth driven primarily by the expansion of the Nintendo Switch platform. Net sales reached 443.9 billion yen, representing a 14.2% increase compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. Operating profit rose significantly by 53.4% to 94.2 billion yen, reflecting robust demand for both hardware and software. However, profit attributable to owners of the parent declined by 4.0% to 62.0 billion yen, largely due to foreign exchange losses totaling 20.5 billion yen.
The performance was anchored by the Nintendo Switch, which saw hardware sales grow by 36.7% to 6.93 million units, bolstered by the release of the extended battery life model and the Nintendo Switch Lite. Software sales for the platform also surged by 38.8% to 58.49 million units, supported by key titles such as Super Mario Maker 2, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. Conversely, the Nintendo 3DS platform continued its expected decline, with hardware and software sales dropping by 62.9% and 58.5%, respectively.
Digital business segments showed substantial momentum, with sales reaching 71.6 billion yen, an 83.0% increase year-on-year, driven by downloadable software and the Nintendo Switch Online service. The mobile business also contributed 19.9 billion yen in revenue, supported by the launch of Dr. Mario World and Mario Kart Tour. Despite these results, the company maintained its original financial forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2020, citing a strategic focus on upcoming software releases and continued hardware sales. The company maintains a strong financial position with a capital adequacy ratio of 78.0%.
