Nintendo’s consolidated financial results for the nine months ending December 31, 2021, reflect a period of transition characterized by a year-over-year decline in hardware sales following the exceptional performance of the previous fiscal year. Net sales reached 1,320.2 billion yen, a 6.0% decrease compared to the same period in 2020, while operating profit fell 9.3% to 472.5 billion yen. Despite these declines, the company maintained a strong financial position, with total assets rising to 2,507.3 billion yen and a capital adequacy ratio of 76.8%.
The hardware business saw a 21.4% decrease in unit sales, totaling 18.95 million units, primarily due to the high baseline set by the previous year’s surge in demand for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. However, the launch of the Nintendo Switch – OLED Model in October 2021 helped sustain momentum, contributing to a cumulative hardware install base exceeding 100 million units. Software performance remained resilient, with unit sales increasing by 1.8% to 179.29 million units. Key titles such as Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl drove significant volume, while legacy titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continued to contribute steadily to overall revenue.
Geographically, the company remains heavily reliant on international markets, with overseas sales accounting for 79.0% of total revenue. The digital business, encompassing downloadable software and Nintendo Switch Online memberships, generated 255.0 billion yen, remaining nearly flat year-over-year. Looking forward, management has revised its full-year forecasts to account for ongoing uncertainties, specifically citing the global semiconductor shortage and the lingering impacts of COVID-19 as primary risks to production and shipping. The company continues to prioritize the expansion of its hardware install base through a combination of existing popular titles and a pipeline of new software releases.
