This 0.6% year-over-year increase follows the industry's first decline in 15 years during 2022. The market is now in a period of cautious recalibration.
The global games market experienced a modest recovery in 2023, reaching $184 billion in revenue, a 0.6% increase year-over-year. This growth follows a significant market contraction in 2022, which marked the first decline in 15 years due to post-pandemic adjustments, supply chain issues, and delayed software releases. Despite the return to growth, the industry faces a period of recalibration, with projections suggesting 2024 will be a sober year as studios adjust their strategies to navigate an uncertain financial climate and the lingering effects of widespread layoffs.
Market performance in 2023 was characterized by a dichotomy between high-performing new releases and established live-service titles. Revenue leaders in the United States and United Kingdom included NBA 2K24, Hogwarts Legacy, and Diablo IV. Notably, Baldur’s Gate 3 emerged as the only top-ten revenue generator from an independent studio. Conversely, monthly active user (MAU) rankings were dominated by long-standing live-service games, with Fortnite securing the top position across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.
Looking ahead, the industry is expected to maintain a growth trajectory, with total global gaming revenue projected to reach $205.7 billion by 2026. However, the immediate outlook remains cautious. The combination of mass workforce reductions across both major publishers and smaller indie studios, alongside the strategic shifts required to sustain profitability, indicates that the industry is prioritizing operational efficiency and long-term stability over rapid expansion in the near term.
