Create free account[Music] hello welcome to pocket gamer. bus's monetizer feature this is where we video the first um five or so minutes of um freet to-play games just have a look at the kind of user experience look at the kind of flow look at the um the monetizing techniques being used the kind of store system and just try to and get an idea about um about new games that being released so we're going to have a look at one new game from caban which is um well-known publisher made lots of money um and this is a a card base a c battle game based on its Um Kingdom of Camelot hit so this is Heroes of Camelot so okay that's always a bit depressing to get a download screen
it's even more depress to get a download screen nothing happens it's even more depress to get a download screen when nothing happens and they want to send you push notifications so in general this is one of my pet hates um having just downloaded a game start it up not played any anything of it I've not seen anything about the game don't know what it looks like how you know and they kind of asking to effec asking to spam me hav got a problem with push appications as a as a marketing technique but there's a time in a place I think this is much too early in the um in in the user experience kind of uh funnel or whatever term we use um actually unfortunately now I'm I'm clicking okay on these so I can kind of see what the push notifications are but I think a lot of people I think push notifications have kind of become useless for for Mass marketing because everyone just go to know oh common network retry that doesn't look very good does it what that means I'm sure it gets better
okay oh that's download a whole bunch of more so we're kind of like uh have a minute of downloads never find that particularly nice experience e we go okay yeah a bunch of blah blah blah blah blah blah king of blah blah blah okay it's going to be about cards okay so at least this is telling us about the card so more State more stars equal greater Rarity got three stars Mana cost is nine the evolved tier is only one the cards enhance level is one okay okay so we straight into a kind of menu top screen yeah okay follow the black follow the follow the red banner up top a battle oh could be quite close I going to lose this one
oh great no I don't really know if that's adding to my good experience here um why did I need to lose that I don't know often think it's quite it's interesting if you lose if you lose the kind of an early stage battle in these type games and then they say and they can take you to a store or give you some item or kind of I mean I guess to a degree they're doing that saying let's go questing but that's um I didn't really need to lose that did I to go on a [Music] quest grun of stamina okay okay oh got a footman can't go wrong you got a footman
got a long B in this almost got an army now no well stop it let's head back to Avalon oh what leveled up I thought it was going back to Avalon really understand this keep hitting the buttons they ask me to oh it's going to be a fight I want to BL me Black Knight again 24 Mana that's why I lost the first time cuz obviously I'm going to win this time I guess there we
go that was [Music] easy oh I've crushed him it's going return stronger summon oh so this is quite a nice thing so this is summoning thing no idea what it is I'm going to summon a card and it's going to cost me 210 gems I've got 210 gems it's lucky isn't it so I think it's good if games point that out but an arch Mage powerful hero is summoned okay rearrange my cards drag your finger the active footman get rid of him and put in okay okay upgrade so it's all pretty standard stuff and card by dragging your new
series of hment slot I'm going to choose the spare card to kind of to evolve to enance or evolve that card kind of all what card battling games are about collecting cards and using those cards to evolve the better cards you've got so it's fairly standard King Arthur's pleased oh no I don't want do that actually um let's go back okay so get a basic idea of the of kind of what's going on with the game I've been a bit rude about the opening experience obviously there's lots of download stuff going on the background or connection stuff going on background but it's pretty clean actually for car battling game um compared to some of the Japanese ones this is kind of quite nice um got Global checko on here what are we using gold floor to upgrade a card so we' basically gone through these kind of situations that's the the tutorial gone through that um this is my level here I've got this thing in so that's going to be some sort of Treasury so if I now have I logged in so music take me to the cab um I know so I
i' I've played the game basically I don't know I don't know I've got these anyway I got them okay um so we' got some retailing going on here there's a free something so for 71 hours at least this one's free it's a beginner's offer so receive the free following with my first purchase okay so if I spend doesn't actually tell me how much it is let's go look huh okay so that's interesting so um so this is the store obviously the hard currency the gems so we can see standard kind of thing is six um transaction uh kind of bands most expensive one that's £7,000 gems that's cost me £69 69p in English money or $99.99 P um the cheapest one is .99 so that's $499 so it's a lot more expensive than the the
normally get well some games still go for the old traditional 99 cent cheapest option the one they're offering me for the uh timed offer is uh $19.99 don't think I'll quite spend that up front um so we go go off that um so that would buy more we take you back there and these are my level UPS so that's Mana stamina and let's [Music] um so if I buy these okay so these are so you can see it's pretty straightforward well looks like pretty straightforward kind of currency system there's gems and gold so to get gold a quest or some my un needed cards everything else summon that we'
seen before was 210 gems which I don't have anymore um summon charms and these so if we want to go to the arena to do some PVP stuff and have to spend hard currency so yeah so pretty pretty straightforward we'll be checking out um how the game does um in terms of kind of a commercial performance because that's kind of where the uh what we like to see with the looking at the and techniques and see whether they actually work or not which is kind of kind of what matters really doesn't it so yeah that's kabam's uh new card-based Camelot Heroes [Music]
Heroes of Camelot, a mobile card-battling spin-off of the established Kingdoms of Camelot franchise, utilizes a standard free-to-play monetization model centered on card collection, evolution, and resource management. The game employs a dual-currency system consisting of gold, earned through gameplay, and gems, a hard currency purchased via in-app transactions. The store structure follows a traditional six-tier pricing model, with gem bundles ranging from a base entry point of £0.99 to a premium tier of £69.99. The game also incorporates time-limited beginner offers to incentivize early spending, alongside mechanics that require hard currency for specific activities like player-versus-player arena participation.
The initial user experience is characterized by a heavy reliance on tutorials and automated progression, guiding players through card summoning, deck management, and basic combat. While the interface is noted for being cleaner and more accessible than many comparable Japanese card-battling titles, the onboarding process is hindered by significant technical friction. Frequent, lengthy download screens and premature requests for push notification permissions early in the user journey create a disjointed experience that risks alienating new players before they engage with the core gameplay loop.
The game’s design relies on familiar genre tropes, including stamina-gated questing and the strategic enhancement of cards through merging. By leveraging the existing Camelot intellectual property, the title aims to convert a loyal audience into a card-battling ecosystem. Ultimately, the game’s success hinges on its ability to balance these aggressive monetization prompts with a sufficiently engaging gameplay loop that justifies the transition from free play to the high-cost gem economy.
