Migu Sports, a subsidiary of the telecommunications giant China Mobile, has entered into a three-year media rights agreement with TJ Sports and Tencent. This deal grants the platform broadcasting rights for several major esports competitions in China, including the League of Legends Pro League (LPL), the League of Legends World Championship, the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), the King Pro League (KPL), and the Peace Elite League (PEL).
The agreement is valued at more than $5.8 million USD (approximately 40 million RMB) annually. Unlike previous high-profile media rights deals in the region, this contract is non-exclusive and does not include distribution rights, meaning Migu Sports cannot resell the content to other platforms. The arrangement reflects a strategic segmentation of the market, as Migu Sports operates as a sports-focused streaming service, distinct from gaming-centric platforms like Huya, which simultaneously holds exclusive media rights for the LPL.
This development follows a period of financial instability for other major Chinese streaming entities, such as Bilibili, which previously held exclusive rights but faced significant losses between 2019 and 2021. Migu Sports’ business model relies on a paid subscriber-based system, presenting a potential challenge in converting traditional esports audiences accustomed to free-to-view content on platforms like DouYu and Huya. The deal underscores the ongoing evolution of broadcasting rights strategies within the Chinese esports ecosystem, prioritizing specialized platform positioning over the broad, exclusive rights models of the past.
