Arkadiusz Jabłoński argues that some popular texts present imaginative, unverifiable interpretations as expert knowledge.
This Polish-language article by Arkadiusz Jabłoński, published in Homo Ludens in 2019, argues that certain popular accounts of Japan constitute what the author calls "careless narratives" (narracje niedbałe), a parasitic subgenre that presents imaginative, non-verifiable interpretations as expert knowledge. Drawing on Eric Berne's transactional model of Parent, Adult, and Child roles, the author contends that such texts assert a predetermined thesis with little regard for facts, reflecting an orientalist and, in his view, xenophobic posture toward the Japanese. The central case study is Karolina Bednarz's book Kwiaty w pudełku (Flowers in a Box), which the author reads as a reportage collection claiming that women in Japan are universally oppressed.
The analysis proceeds through close textual examination of several chapters, including the account of Raichō Hiratsuka, the Minamata disease reportage, the leprosy narrative, and the story of a woman described as makeinu. The author identifies recurring patterns: selective or distorted use of facts, the omission of male-side social pressures, the uncritical extension of individual examples to an entire society, and misleading translations of Japanese idioms. He also notes that the book's narrative avoids engagement with Japanese men and with structural issues such as demographic decline, urban concentration, and the family system, which the author argues are more substantive sources of social strain.
The article's scope is limited to a single book and a broader Polish popular-discourse tradition on Japan, and its methodology is qualitative textual critique rather than empirical survey. Its conclusion is that the text offers little contribution to either Japanese studies or feminist scholarship, and that the author's broader aim is to heighten Polish readers' awareness of anti-informational mechanisms in orientalist writing.
