Jacksonville, Florida, Mayor Donna Deegan has proposed a $3 million investment to construct a state-of-the-art esports arena at the University of North Florida. The project is part of a broader initiative to utilize approximately $7.98 million in unused municipal funding identified from the 2023-2024 fiscal year. The proposal currently awaits approval from the Jacksonville City Council.
The primary objective of the investment is to bolster the city’s standing in the global esports market while fostering a next-generation workforce. By establishing a dedicated facility within the university’s John A. Delaney Student Union, the administration aims to attract students interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields and generate future revenue for the city. The proposed arena would complement existing campus gaming resources, which currently include PC stations, consoles, and lounge spaces.
Beyond the esports facility, the city plans to allocate the remaining surplus funds toward public infrastructure, specifically designating $4 million for the renovation of two local fire stations and $693,000 for a specialized personal protective equipment wash facility for firefighters. This strategic allocation of capital reflects a dual focus on essential municipal services and emerging digital entertainment sectors. The initiative highlights a growing trend of local governments investing in collegiate esports infrastructure to drive regional economic development and educational engagement.
