QRogue is an educational game designed to teach the mathematical foundations of quantum computing to computer science students. By utilizing a Rogue-like game structure, the project aims to move beyond simple conceptual metaphors—such as those found in existing quantum-themed games—to provide a more rigorous understanding of how quantum operations, state vectors, and matrix-vector multiplications function in practice. The game challenges players to manipulate circuit matrices to transform input states into target outputs, effectively gamifying the technical mechanics of quantum algorithms.
The development team conducted a small-scale user study involving eight computer science students to evaluate the game’s effectiveness and user experience. Participants engaged in a 20-minute session consisting of a demographic survey, 12–13 minutes of gameplay, and a post-experience assessment. While the Rogue-like framework and visual style were generally well-received, with participants reporting high levels of curiosity and immersion, the study revealed significant challenges regarding the game's accessibility.
Key findings indicate that the current learning curve is too steep for many users, primarily due to a lack of foundational explanations regarding the underlying matrix mathematics. Six of the eight participants reported feeling discouraged by unclear instructions, and feedback on learning outcomes was mixed. Consequently, the study concludes that while the game successfully integrates complex quantum concepts into an engaging environment, future iterations must prioritize a more gradual onboarding process, enhanced tutorial materials, and clearer in-game feedback to improve the educational experience and reduce player frustration.
