Summary

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has formally initiated efforts to establish a dedicated Olympic Esports Games. During the 141st IOC session in Mumbai, President Thomas Bach announced that the newly formed IOC Esports Commission has been tasked with studying the feasibility and structure of such an event. This strategic move follows the IOC’s previous experimentation with the Olympic Esports Series, which featured virtual versions of traditional sports such as cycling, archery, and baseball.

The IOC justifies this expansion by citing a global gaming audience of approximately three billion people, with 500 million individuals specifically interested in esports and virtual sports simulations. The organization aims to capture this demographic, which is largely under the age of 34, while maintaining long-standing institutional values. Central to these values is a strict prohibition against the inclusion of violent video games. Consequently, popular competitive titles such as League of Legends, Counter-Strike 2, and Valorant are excluded from consideration.

This policy creates a clear divide between the IOC’s vision for esports and the broader commercial industry. While the committee remains open to incorporating sports-adjacent titles—such as Rocket League, NBA 2K, or various racing and sports simulation games—it refuses to recognize traditional esports staples that involve simulated combat. This stance has drawn criticism for its inconsistency, particularly given that the traditional Olympic Games include combat sports like boxing and judo. The future of the Olympic Esports Games remains tied to the ongoing work of the Esports Commission, which is currently led by David Lappartient.
