Between January and September 2024, indie titles accounted for 48% of the platform's total full-game revenue. This marks a significant shift in the market.
The indie games sector on Steam has reached a historic milestone, achieving revenue parity with AA and AAA titles for the first time. Between January 1 and September 30, 2024, indie games generated nearly $4 billion in gross revenue from full-game sales, representing 48% of the platform's total $8.3 billion revenue for that period. This performance marks a significant shift, with the indie market share doubling since 2018 and increasing by 17 percentage points compared to 2023.
The analysis, which focuses exclusively on full-game sales on Steam, highlights that indie titles accounted for 58% of the 504 million units sold year-to-date. While indie games comprise 98.9% of the 13,007 products released on the platform this year, revenue remains heavily concentrated. The "Triple-i" segment—defined by larger teams and high sales volume—accounts for 53% of all indie revenue. Furthermore, the market is increasingly influenced by high-profile outliers; for instance, a single title, Black Myth: Wukong, generated $1 billion in revenue, surpassing the combined earnings of all other indie games released in 2024.
Market maturation is evident as developers gain experience, with repeat creators seeing higher average revenues on subsequent releases. Despite the blurring lines between indie and AAA classifications due to rising production budgets, the sector continues to show strong growth. Projections for the full year estimate that the indie segment will reach $4.9 billion in revenue, an 82% year-over-year increase, alongside a 33% rise in unit sales. These findings underscore a broader trend where indie studios are capturing a larger portion of the market, even as success remains skewed toward the largest and most established independent projects.
