The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are scheduled for a holiday release. These devices represent a strategic shift for Microsoft.
Microsoft has partnered with Asus to introduce the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, a new line of Windows-based gaming handhelds slated for a holiday release. These devices represent a strategic shift for Microsoft, focusing on an open, PC-led ecosystem rather than a proprietary console-locked handheld. By utilizing Windows 11, the devices allow users to access games from multiple storefronts, including Steam, Battle.net, GoG, Ubisoft Connect, and Xbox PC Game Pass, while supporting Microsoft’s Play Anywhere program.
The hardware lineup features two distinct models. The standard ROG Xbox Ally includes an AMD Ryzen Z2 processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD, while the higher-end ROG Xbox Ally X offers an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. Both devices feature 7-inch 1080p touchscreens and a specialized, full-screen Xbox interface designed to optimize system resources by stripping away unnecessary Windows background processes. This software optimization reportedly frees up 2GB of memory and improves power efficiency during sleep mode.
The market positioning for these handhelds remains a subject of industry debate. While dedicated PC gaming handhelds have seen modest adoption—with estimates ranging from 1.5 million to 5.3 million units sold annually—they currently occupy a niche compared to the scale of traditional home consoles like the PlayStation 5. Microsoft aims to leverage the strength of the Xbox brand and its commitment to cross-platform accessibility to expand this segment. By prioritizing a flexible, Windows-based architecture, the company seeks to balance hardware investment with long-term engagement and monetization across its broader PC gaming portfolio.
