Alchymia is an indie simulation game currently in development by solo creator Julia Reberg, designed to emphasize the discovery and experimentation inherent in alchemy. The project is part of the 2020 Games Lift Incubator program in Hamburg, Germany. The core thesis of the game is to provide a condensed, highly replayable experience that avoids the "optimization" trap often found in complex strategy titles, where players rely on external wikis rather than personal exploration.
The gameplay centers on a turn-based loop where players purchase ingredients, manage expeditions, and experiment with preparation methods—such as cooking or grinding—to create potions and powders with unique effects. To ensure high replayability and prevent static optimization, the game features procedurally generated resources for every session. A central "zombie timer" mechanic serves as a narrative and mechanical pressure point, forcing players to complete their Magnum Opus within a limited timeframe to avoid a game-over scenario.
By distilling complex simulation mechanics into a focused, short-form experience, the developer aims to solve the common issue of player fatigue in long-form strategy games. The project is currently in the prototype phase, utilizing a design philosophy that prioritizes intuitive, essentialized systems over exhaustive complexity. By limiting the scope of the game, the developer intends to foster a sense of wonder and discovery, ensuring that the act of research remains the primary source of engagement for the player.
