This shift was led by Chinese publishers such as NetEase and Tencent. Initial mobile adaptations prioritized a first-mover advantage by mimicking PC predecessors.
The mobile gaming market experienced a significant shift in early 2018 as Battle Royale titles, led by Chinese publishers such as NetEase and Tencent, rapidly expanded from PC to mobile platforms. This analysis evaluates the feature sets of early mobile Battle Royale entrants, specifically focusing on how these games can evolve their meta-game and monetization strategies to achieve long-term success in Western markets like the United States.
The research utilizes data tracking over 200 features across top-grossing mobile games to identify industry trends. Key findings indicate that while initial mobile adaptations prioritized a first-mover advantage by mimicking the core gameplay of PC predecessors, they lacked the depth required for sustained engagement. To improve retention and monetization, the analysis suggests integrating more complex meta-game elements, such as character-based systems with rarity tiers, which are prevalent in half of the top 100 grossing mobile games. Furthermore, the implementation of material-based item crafting and diversified gacha pools is recommended to increase content volume without compromising competitive balance.
The analysis concludes that successful mobile Battle Royale games must move beyond basic cosmetic-focused metas. By incorporating daily reward systems that utilize gacha mechanics and leveraging live events to introduce exclusive, time-bound content, developers can significantly improve player retention. The overarching thesis emphasizes that game features should not be treated as isolated components but as an interconnected ecosystem where content, monetization, and engagement mechanics work in concert to create a cohesive and compelling user experience.
