This acquisition is part of a strategic partnership with the Version1 ownership group. The deal expands G2 Esports' footprint in the North American esports market.
G2 Esports has finalized an agreement to acquire the assets of the Minnesota-based organization Version1, marking a significant consolidation within the North American esports landscape. As part of this strategic transaction, the ownership group behind Version1—which includes WISE Ventures and investor Gary Vaynerchuk—has become a shareholder in G2 Esports. While financial terms remain undisclosed, the deal grants the Berlin-based G2 Esports the operating rights to the Call of Duty League franchise, Minnesota Røkkr.
This acquisition represents a broader expansion effort by G2 Esports into the North American market, following its recent entry into the VCT Americas league through the acquisition of The Guard’s Valorant roster. With the integration of the Minnesota Røkkr, G2 Esports now manages competitive rosters across eight major titles, including League of Legends, Counter Strike 2, and Rocket League.
The transaction effectively concludes operations for Version1, with the brand being put on hold and its North American staff laid off. This move follows months of speculation regarding Version1’s future, as the organization had been openly exploring merger or acquisition opportunities since early 2023. The transition serves as a final chapter for the Version1 brand while allowing G2 Esports to solidify its footprint in the professional Call of Duty circuit and expand its global portfolio.
