Create free accounthello and welcome to pocket gamer. B's YouTube channel I'm John Jordan and this is our first time user experience playlist so as you can see we are we have downloading thank you for we are downloading bits of mobious Final Fantasy um so the select new game to start new game from the beginning um okay recommend you enable okay U enter your character name okay so this is interesting that we get up to 16 characters in a lot of um Japanese games just because of the Lang difference of characters in Japanese language they sometimes limit you only to eight characters so that's good um that they allow for a longer character set so we're connecting in as all um Asian RPG seem to do at the moment or even a lot of other games um you get push notifications for is one of the first things you see which is bad so
push notifications this prompt can only be shown once so if I say don't allow I can still go into settings and reset push notification to be on but the developer can't can't show me this prompt again um which is quite an important prompt push notifications it gets people to re-engage in the game um so I say don't allow that's poor um error into Game Center okay bling hear me so this is not a good experience um you may temp temporarily disabled Game Center well yeah okay but now um okay don't know what to do at this point okay let's try again see if we can do it all again agree new game skip okay characters again so go back to
push notifications prompt um what some developers are doing now is they are firing up a push an in-game push notification screen which isn't the official push notification screen it's just their own one which they can fire up as many times as they like um and if you click yes on that you then go to the the official Apple screen which is the way to do it obviously the other thing to do is you should really run that push notification prompt when you've gone through someone's gone through the tutorial um okay position of menus I mean really do I care really do I care very odd okay confirm download again this is quite a um common in Japanese games Korean games um and to be fair you know developers are limited by how much you can run from um the app store or or the Google Play Store they don't generally allow you to have these massive files um they allow you to download like a stub file and then download the rest of the game from um the game developer servers but it's very
poor when it comes to first time us experience so obviously particularly for a game like a Final Fantasy game which has very strong kind of brand cache people just like oh yeah I'll try that that's free to play I'll go and try that new Final Fantasy game what what do they do well in this case we've gone through add two attempts at logging him and now we're waiting um you know what it looks like there's going to be a few minutes do you know um and yeah they can put this trailer thing on but it's it's pretty poor you know for for you know what you in the world of mobile games at the moment you just want to get someone into the game very quickly and it makes much more sense for developers really to just almost have a tutorial which is question you know separate from the main game you can get once you get someone through a tutorial then you can obviously you can stream in the background but equally you could then put the download in this doesn't have to all be happening up front um and if you look at the best game developers supercell being the obvious example different types of game are granted but um their game load in 102 seconds mean nothing here and that's why
when you're playing their games you just know oh got you know I want to play gam straight in you're straight into Clash Royale straight into Boom Beach and you're playing a game you're not hanging around wondering if you've got Wii or you know the other other thing is with with this kind of freet to play situation as soon as someone decides to uninstall your game or not go through the install process you've probably lost it and that's why um day one retention rates which is something that people look at a lot of so awful you will find so I think for plenty of games certainly ones doing this to you your day one retention could be you know 20% or something just cuz a lot of people install the game try and load it and then just never come the if paying for installs certainly that's a total waste of money look now okay 20% to go do you see it palia a world of Hope Unbound
you may call me Fox I will be your guide in this place guess have to unpack yourself on it probably another few minutes or another few somethings okay 100% now what we doing the other thing obviously should be when these these go down you don't have to have them as actually as they're happening much more sensible to maybe speed it up in the beginning slow it down in the middle slow it down towards speed up towards the end I mean there's psychological ways of doing this well now you're just kind of hanging around and what down what's going on you're kind of confused okay hopefully we've made it yes we
have so let's actually start the game he says hopefully okay now hopefully probably be a massive cut scene now that we can't skip we can't skip it okay let's skip the massive cut scene oh that's really hard to speed it up no speed up the really cut scene so we're going to attack little bit gloomy isn't it so tutorial start good play tutorial to obtain jobs and ability cards okay attack probably what happens tap to
attack an enemy you can execute AC until your count Falls to zero where's my count that is anyway doesn't matter did my attack oh some more attacks it's very Gloom isn't it um select Target which one should I select I select this one okay what it's saying tap Target view to select a different Target tap an enemy to change Target okay now Target view to go back to the B of view why would I want to do that that's a bit odd don't understand that um using powerful abilities requires orbs F Magical Power Attack en attack enemies to draw Elemental orbs okay now what probably to to attack that you have
four Earth orb stock okay how do I use it then try okay I tap on it okay b battle Basics attack to store element orbs and expand them to unleash abilities okay that kind of makes sense attack and then so Fring different ability how I do that I've attacked him do I do I get different AB try using less blizzard was like a bit lesser blizzard okay take okay and we've got like a an elemental thing so pretty common in RPGs this way we' got a four-way and fire waterer and Earth we win yeah we won and we doing all over again that's five, today store element or with normal attacks and use to power Abes okay
I'm supped to keep taing to H I think lost the tutorial bit though oh he looks a bit harder do tell me what to do break use brakes attacks to reduce an enemy's breake Gorge okay normal attacks are relatively effective at breaking let's try the ability okay use the sword okay bash using ability against en turn to break g red break red break GES easy to reduce normal attacks okay broken past eny defenses will break the number displayed over the number
icon three there number of actions you can take before them is okay exploit breaks to the utmost did I get him I got him oh and so I'm going to do it get all over again just use all my magic Qui oh he's still going he's still going there break okay not entirely sure I fully grasped everything that's going on in that tutorial
but we have a cut scene sort by tell me what are your name I'm speeding up through the cut scene CU all the cut scenes are Bonkers okay so got to score um weekly rankings I rank not very high in the world unsurprisingly uh got some Gil I got some XP I've not leveled up um my deck okay I've got skill seeds okay and you can't tap the back to oh that's the guy attack getting something else an arrow reward W
okay let's do another okay getting a bit more user interface here oh okay so it's I'm having building a deck I didn't realize this was kind of a card based thing but it is a card based thing I can set up the four ability cards to a deck so this is my character is it I've the new into my deck yes level okay this concludes deck was pretty brief tap home lots of connec going on isn't it let do that so uh information stamina two battles four
okay certain bonuses yeah water boss okay you choose the deck I want to take okay different decks bigs a rental card though you can temporally borrow one card from another player okay should we do that then tap rent okay so it's a bit gloomy that level support okay attack um you should have stored enough life now use barrier so that's going just put barrier around me okay
um these numbers are okay heal okaying let's trigger element Drive wonder what this thing was slide your finger what is that okay house okay that makes sense yes use it when it's low probably use theing my that's true those chaps oh him again oh four elements let's Tri element drive hold El R slide it onto there release element Drive Now using one of the four elements to trigger an element
ding more element to manipulate that this has got complicated should be using one Earth sword well at least it looks nice even if I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing oh him again just what to do tip they keep popping out
depressing and G okay he's dead right so this game is obious going take a bit of getting used to n is incredibly Japanese um it's the tutorial has not been particularly helpful um skill seeds about score yeah card good that's the GU F okay back battle results following the players rental cards borrow chance to see him again I don't know if I want the chob is that good thing or not no see no at
this point the following players disabled in tutorial getting another good Phoenix down okay always useful to get Resurrection okay um each Jo skill deck skill panel above this number so I'm using my skill SE okay there's a panel which I can unlock with 10 I got i' got 18 that's okay that panel what panel is it this one unlocked a new uh enhancement okay tap back some P jobs SE okay
this tap home connect okay so I think at that point I've been probably been confused enough with this tutorial so we've not quite finished this tutorial but maybe it's Final Fantasy but we can see and to be fair the game has been very popular in Japan um I think at one point it got up to the cly the top five top grossing um down about 5 million downloads um so um it's been pretty successful over there to me it strikes me as a very Japanese game that hasn't had much culturalization um and will be but Final Fantasy is a is a Big Brand so so so potentially there's a big market for that kind of stuff um so we'll have to see how we get on um probably play it some more and um see whether at some stage we can talk a bit more about things like monetization and um General gameplay but um thanks for watching our video so we do a lot of this freet to-play um first Music Experience stuff as you can see from our playlist um so thanks for watching and I hope to see you again soon
The first-time user experience (FTUE) for Mobius Final Fantasy highlights significant friction points common in Japanese mobile RPGs, specifically regarding onboarding and technical implementation. The primary critique centers on the game’s failure to prioritize player engagement, as the initial experience is marred by lengthy, mandatory asset downloads and a lack of intuitive guidance. By forcing users to wait for substantial data transfers before beginning gameplay, the title risks high abandonment rates, potentially limiting day-one retention to as low as 20% due to the frustration of the initial setup process.
The technical execution of the onboarding process is identified as a major barrier. The game relies on a "stub file" approach, requiring users to download large amounts of data from external servers, which creates a stagnant, unengaging waiting period. Furthermore, the game’s handling of system prompts—such as push notifications and Game Center integration—is poorly timed, occurring before the user has established any investment in the experience. This contrasts sharply with industry leaders like Supercell, which prioritize rapid entry into gameplay to ensure immediate user satisfaction.
Once the game begins, the tutorial is described as overly complex and poorly localized for Western audiences. The mechanics, which involve a combination of card-based deck building, elemental orb management, and break-gauge systems, are introduced through dense, non-skippable cutscenes and repetitive prompts that fail to clarify the core gameplay loop. Despite the strong brand cachet of the Final Fantasy franchise and its proven success in the Japanese market—where it achieved top-five grossing status and millions of downloads—the lack of culturalization and the cumbersome, confusing tutorial structure present significant hurdles for broader international adoption.
