Create free accountHello and welcome to Pocket Gamer Office's YouTube channel. I'm John Jordan and this is our first time user experience playlist. So, we are going to play Godfinger 2. So, this was out on Thursday. I've just downloaded it and I actually downloaded it on Thursday and I'm not really playing it yet and we've got an update. So, this is one of these um I guess slightly unfortunate things that games go live and then they get bugs and such like. So, we'll just wait for this to load up. So, a bit about Godfinger. So, Godfinger was uh kind of back in the day of um the very first kind of free-to-play uh iOS games. Um it was a kind of quite a quite a high-profile game. It was um developed by UK developer um
called Wonderland published by ngmoco. So, ngmoco was bought by DNA, the big Japanese company for tons and tons of money. Um and it did pretty well although it was very early in free-to-play so um the market wasn't particularly big and then lots of stuff happened with with DNA and uh ngmoco that we won't really go into. Um the sequel had to be started and kind of ground to a halt and then interestingly the original developer um got bought by Zynga and then Zynga um didn't buy them anymore and basically shut them down and then the original guys behind it reset up another studio, bought back the rights Godfinger 2. Long story. Um so, yeah, it's pretty much the same as before in the sense that you're on this kind of um this kind of 2D world kind of a god game. So, um let's use lightning powers. Press and hold this guy to charge lightning. And drag your finger to the to the onto the tree. Another one. That's a little tree, that one, isn't
So, you're very much in the kind of Peter Molyneux game of things of the god game, moving stuff around, telling them what to collect, kind of that kind of simulator worshipers sort of stuff. There we go, he's happy. Leveled up. That's what you like to have in a tutorial, make the world lovely again, yeah, okay. Happy with the loads of ones. Okay, so we're going to go through a whole There's all stuff, so we've got some bread, so we've got a farming thing going on there. Okay, select main power. I don't know what that Oh, it's there. I must have done the wrong thing. Okay, so fill it Okay, now. Okay, so we're going to need to switch it to That's it, you fool, you really. Okay, so this is an interesting That's an interesting thing for the farming
type mechanism. It's already you kind of thinking this is quite It came up in there. This is quite in-depth compared to uh Dragon So, you can see a resource and then the timing, so we know all this from free-to-play games. Collect the flower. Uh we're moving this little chap around. Where are we moving him to this time? We're back to where we were again. Place follower here. Well, where's my follower? Is that him? So, we have an order queue. Bonus challenge, what am I doing? I don't know what happened there. I didn't do anything wrong. Well, that's a proper tutorial mechanic. Um bonus life, finish the bread. He's going to eat the bread. So, you can see now kind of what's going on with this kind of UI in the top left, resource type stuff, so I've got some hard currency, so I can't see Will you answer my prayer for bread? He's giving me bread as a reward.
That's a prayer. Okay, everybody loves it. Definitely the god game stuff. Gift box. So, we're going to get a gift box. Some lovely stuff. Oh, a new follower, Eve. Well, that's a beautiful, isn't it? Um so, she's good with the hands. Now, that the original god finger. That's what it looks like. It might be a bit of an unlocking. Place Eve's house. Oh, I see. So, that's the house there. Okay. What does she want? Oh, we can give them to Okay, you don't have to use the rain power to create trees and plants by hand. Hold the sky to make rain. Oh, that was quick. What am I going to do? Okay. She's happy. We've got a little photo there as well. Now, so the prayers are kind of like a kind of
some sort of list, aren't they? Some sort of mission list. No, they're not what I'm looking at. Uh okay, never mind. So, that's my Okay, so I'm leveling up with the hearts. What's here? Select a follower to see their prayer. He wants wood, then, doesn't he? Oh, did I have the wood already? So, it's a little bit confusing at this early stage. There's quite a lot going on. Oh, that's my So, that's a different quest. This is This is a more long-term stuff, then. Play for 7 days in a row. Acquire followers. Answer their prayers. Okay. Playing every one will unlock my daily quest streak. Now, I think this is quite nice what we're doing. So, push notifications. It doesn't ask you straight away like a lot of games still do. Um yes, I will have that. And then go into the now it's the standard Apple dialog button. One quest is more followers. It's going to be a
fox with cameras and stuff as well. Oh, so in the So, we're going to take us to the store. Really going through the mechanics here. So, there's Amy going to get her for free season one gift. I've got to find some free space for Amy. Does it really matter? I'm going to put her around here. Hopefully the earth can get bigger. I don't want to run out. Where is Okay. So, if I get all five of those, my reward is Johnny. I've got to love to see you. Please plant some corn. Oh, but this is still going. What's going on? That's our farm. So, that's quite nice to have a mechanic system to move the earth around. Place the corn field. Don't need that chap then. Use the corn on chickens. Oh goodness. Okay. Where's my little chap? There he is. I guess we'll see that's timing down to Oh, he's the worker then I guess. Um wait till my friends see this.
Get them right in the face. So, that didn't make that work. That's going to take 3 minutes to grow that corn. Okay. So, what does he get? He's got his bread. It's kind of nice to have the camera zooming in and out actually. Um nice touch. Um who else? Oh, we've got to collect that guy. So, you can see we're kind of tapping a lot of tapping. So, what does she want? Do I have a bread? Does she want a bread? She's praying. Oh, well, I've got some of that, haven't I? Do we not have enough of it? I do have enough of it. Yeah, there we go. Oh, so that's the one in the top of my resources. Let me show you what my resources actually Ah, that's I've leveled leveled up. Okay, hen house is on How to start. Okay, well, we're really zapping through it. Move space for the hen house. I'm going to forget where all this stuff is, all right? I suspect.
Place me there. You know, where are you? I mean What comes first, chicken or the egg? And let's see chicken feed makes some eggs, pick me up. You want bread. It looks like it was also okay. So, can I not do that then? Let's try to get me some spend some hard currency. Come on. Get this going again. I don't know if you're picking them up. Where you going? Where you going? Pick me up when I'm probably going to pick you Okay, yeah, yeah. All this stuff is there for free. We need plenty of chicken feed. Looks like there's a quest to do. Make 10 bakery orders. No, make chicken feed at the windmill. Hens need food.
Make chicken feed at the windmill so we can make more eggs. Where's the windmill? Put them in the windmill. That Oh, that's grain. That's chicken feed by the looks of it. Okay. So Hm, so there we go. That's Godfinger two. Another gift box. Is that No, I don't want to get to 100. Oh, I have got 100 there. I don't want to get a gift box. Oh, I can't buy a gift box. Got bread. So, yeah, so we can see kind of resource but doing resources in a slightly different way with all this kind of quite detailed kind of management of little figures who quite demanding of what they want. Um it will be interesting cuz I guess Godfinger when the original one came out was kind of successful but as I say it was the start of the free-to-play kind of explosion and the mechanics there I guess people were kind of un- an unsophisticated audience
really I suppose in how in how they were being taken through games whereas this kind of it's still different enough. I mean the original Godfinger was different even though you didn't know how different it was because there hadn't been a lot of free-to-play games coming out there whereas this is mixing up a lot of different um kind of genres and as I said in the first game you had a stage where you could go and attack other people whether that's in this one don't know yet. But then there's certainly a lot of potential here. I guess the only thing I would say as you've probably seen is maybe a little bit complicated from an from an opening tutorial. A lot of stuff being thrown at you there which is um maybe off-putting for people and especially a game like this where it is quite casual and you can imagine it's quite a big um potentially bigger bigger appeal um to mass market. Um so yeah, we will see. So that's our first time user experience with Godfinger 2. Thanks for watching. Don't forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel so we do a lot of this uh playing um first time user experience uh playing the tutorial and also um going to games that we play a bit more um over time and going into more detail on how they're working, monetization,
that kind of stuff. So if that floats your boat, please subscribe and I hope to see you again soon. Thanks.
GodFinger 2 serves as a modern reboot of the original 2010 god-game simulation, transitioning the franchise into the contemporary free-to-play mobile market. The game centers on a 2D world where players act as a deity, manipulating the environment and managing followers through various tasks, such as farming, resource collection, and fulfilling specific prayers. The core gameplay loop involves balancing resource production—such as bread and chicken feed—with the needs of individual followers, requiring players to navigate complex management systems and timing-based mechanics.
The initial user experience reveals a dense tutorial structure that introduces multiple layers of gameplay simultaneously. Players must manage resource queues, place structures, and monitor follower satisfaction, all while navigating a UI that tracks hard currency and long-term quest streaks. The game incorporates standard mobile engagement features, including push notifications and daily login rewards, to encourage retention. While the game retains the charm of the original, it introduces a more sophisticated level of management compared to its predecessor, reflecting the evolution of the free-to-play genre over the last decade.
Despite the potential for broad appeal, the complexity of the early-game tutorial presents a significant hurdle. The sheer volume of information and tasks presented to the player within the first ten minutes risks overwhelming a casual audience. While the game successfully integrates familiar simulation mechanics with a unique, interactive god-game aesthetic, its long-term success depends on whether the depth of its management systems provides sufficient engagement or creates an overly complicated barrier to entry for the mass market.
