The PLAY20 Game Jam, hosted by Gamecity Hamburg in November 2020, served as a collaborative creative event held in conjunction with the PLAY20 Creative Gaming Festival. The primary purpose of the initiative was to foster international game development through a time-constrained challenge, encouraging participants to interpret the theme of Exploring Borders through various mechanical and narrative lenses.
The event successfully engaged over 100 participants from across the globe, who worked over a 45-hour period to produce 26 distinct game titles. These projects explored the theme of borders through diverse interpretations, ranging from literal, tactile boundaries within gameplay to more abstract concepts involving the intersection of perception, reality, sleep, the human psyche, and moral dilemmas.
The scope of the event was international, drawing a diverse pool of developers to contribute to the digital game industry. The results of the jam were made publicly accessible via the Gamecity Hamburg itch.io platform, with selected highlights showcased through external streaming media. This initiative reflects the broader organizational commitment of Gamecity Hamburg to support game development through community-driven events, incubation programs, and industry networking.
