Stream Hatchet
These titles average 2 million daily hours watched in their first 7 days. However, they often experience a rapid decline in streaming interest and wishlists within 30 days.
No Early Access. Games with no early access period see the highest initial viewership.
The analysis examines the correlation between live-streaming viewership and various early access strategies for games released since 2024. By comparing streaming data with Steam wishlist metrics, the study aims to help publishers determine the effectiveness of different release models—specifically no early access, short early access (one week or less), and long early access—in driving pre-release awareness and post-launch sales. The methodology involves a comparative analysis of 24 selected titles, categorized by their release strategy, to evaluate how streaming interest translates into consumer engagement.
Key findings indicate that release strategies significantly impact audience behavior. Games with no early access typically experience a high-intensity launch but suffer from lackluster follow-up, as interest often plateaus quickly. Short early access periods effectively function as a premiere, capturing peak viewership before the official launch, which can lead to a subsequent surge in wishlists. However, this model is less effective for established franchises with high brand recognition, where fans are already committed. Long early access periods, primarily utilized by indie developers, create a distinct pattern characterized by initial spikes in interest followed by a flat period, with potential for renewed engagement upon the official release.
The study concludes that while live streaming is a vital tool for game discovery, its impact is highly dependent on the chosen release strategy and the nature of the game. Long-term early access carries the risk of audience burnout or market saturation, which can diminish the impact of an official launch. Ultimately, the data suggests that publishers must align their streaming marketing efforts with their specific release model to maximize visibility and wishlist conversion, noting that established IP may derive less benefit from early access streaming than new, unproven titles.
