Dragon Quest and HD-2D RPGs on Live Streaming

The analysis examines the live-streaming potential for the upcoming Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake by evaluating historical viewership trends of the Dragon Quest franchise and the broader HD-2D RPG genre. The primary thesis suggests that while the Dragon Quest series maintains a powerful, loyal, and concentrated Japanese audience, expanding its reach to non-Japanese-speaking markets requires strategic engagement with the global, diverse fanbase currently supporting other HD-2D titles.

Data indicates that Dragon Quest viewership is trending upward, with recent spin-offs like Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince generating 6.8 million hours watched in its debut week. However, this engagement is heavily reliant on Japanese influencers, such as Junichi Kato and VTuber Kuzuha. In contrast, the HD-2D genre—exemplified by titles like Sea of Stars and Octopath Traveler—demonstrates a more global appeal. Sea of Stars, for instance, achieved 1.9 million hours watched in its first week, supported by a broader base of international streamers from the U.S., South Korea, and Spain.

Methodologically, the analysis utilizes audience overlap data to identify potential growth segments. Findings reveal that viewers of retro-focused titles like Dragon Quest V show a higher affinity for HD-2D RPGs than those watching modern mainline entries like Dragon Quest XI. Consequently, the study concludes that targeting streamers who specialize in retro gaming and established HD-2D titles offers a more effective pathway for Square Enix to broaden its demographic reach. By leveraging these specific influencer communities, the publisher can build a robust foundation for future releases, including the highly anticipated Dragon Quest XII.
