The Danish esports organization Copenhagen Flames officially ceased operations and filed for bankruptcy in May 2023, resulting in the termination of its entire staff. Founded in 2016, the organization was a prominent fixture in the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) ecosystem, managing both men’s and women’s professional rosters as well as an academy-level team.
The closure followed a six-month period of intensive efforts to secure capital and restructure the business. Despite achieving a positive annual financial result in 2021, the organization struggled to maintain profitability amidst broader economic challenges within the esports industry. Management attempted to mitigate these pressures by diversifying revenue streams—including tournament organization, talent development, and corporate team-building services—and reducing operational costs, such as the dissolution of its Fortnite division earlier in 2023.
Ultimately, the organization failed to secure the necessary funding to continue operations. According to CEO Steffen Thomson, potential investors were deterred by the prevailing instability in the esports market, which has been characterized by widespread cost-cutting, personnel layoffs, and the necessity for investors to cover recurring losses. The inability to bridge this immediate funding gap forced the organization to shutter its doors permanently, marking a significant exit for a long-standing participant in the competitive gaming landscape.
