Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported strong consolidated financial results for the three-month period ending June 30, 2020, characterized by significant year-over-year growth in net sales and operating income. Net sales reached 87,054 million yen, a 63.2% increase compared to the same period in 2019, while operating income surged by 241.4% to 24,549 million yen. Profit attributable to owners of the parent rose 248.6% to 14,372 million yen. These results were achieved despite an extraordinary loss of 2,226 million yen related to temporary amusement facility closures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Digital Entertainment segment served as the primary driver of this performance, with net sales doubling to 74,363 million yen and operating income increasing by 242.0%. This growth was fueled by the successful release of Final Fantasy VII Remake, strong subscription numbers for Final Fantasy XIV, and continued contributions from mobile titles such as Dragon Quest Walk. Conversely, the Amusement segment faced a sharp decline, reporting a 57.6% drop in net sales and an operating loss of 1,512 million yen due to government-mandated facility closures. The Publication and Merchandising segments also saw robust growth, with net sales rising 41.1% and 65.9%, respectively.
The company maintains a solid financial position with an equity ratio of 77.6%. However, management has opted to leave consolidated earnings forecasts for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2021, undetermined. This decision reflects the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on consumer behavior and business operations. The company intends to disclose formal forecasts once the economic environment provides sufficient clarity for reliable projections.
