Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported consolidated financial results for the three-month period ending June 30, 2013, reflecting a period of structural transition and strategic realignment within the global gaming industry. The company recorded net sales of 24.08 billion yen, a 3.3% decrease compared to the same period in the previous year. Despite the decline in top-line revenue, the company achieved an operating income of 689 million yen, marking a recovery from the 1.16 billion yen operating loss reported in the prior year. However, the company ultimately posted a net loss of 493 million yen, largely driven by a 1.6 billion yen extraordinary loss related to the evaluation of work-in-progress game content as part of a comprehensive development policy review.
Performance across business segments was mixed. The Digital Entertainment segment, the company’s primary revenue driver, saw net sales rise by 2.1% to 11.58 billion yen, supported by the steady performance of browser and smartphone titles such as "Kaku-San-Sei Million Arthur" and the MMORPG "DRAGON QUEST X." Conversely, the Publication segment experienced a significant downturn, with net sales falling 28.2% due to the conclusion of several popular manga-based animation series. The Amusement segment reported 9.72 billion yen in sales, while the Merchandising segment saw modest growth of 6.3%.
Facing an increasingly competitive and oligopolistic console market in North America and Europe, alongside the rapid proliferation of smart devices, the company has initiated a fundamental reform of its business structure. To better reflect the inherent volatility of the current market environment, the company has transitioned to providing consolidated financial forecasts in ranges rather than specific figures for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014.
