Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported a significant downturn in financial performance for the nine-month period ending December 31, 2012. Despite achieving net sales of 102,794 million yen, representing a 7.4% increase compared to the same period in the previous year, the company incurred an operating loss of 4,853 million yen and a net loss of 5,745 million yen. This stands in stark contrast to the prior year’s performance, where the company recorded an operating income of 11,220 million yen and a net income of 5,013 million yen.
The primary driver of this decline was the Digital Entertainment segment, which struggled to generate expected returns on investments within the global console game market. While the segment saw a 7.7% increase in net sales to 57,827 million yen, it recorded an operating loss of 392 million yen. Although specific titles such as the browser game SENGOKU IXA and social titles like Kaku-San-Sei Million Arthur performed well, these successes were insufficient to offset broader market challenges. The Amusement segment also faced difficulties, reporting an operating loss of 316 million yen due to the underperformance of arcade game machines released earlier in the fiscal year.
In contrast, the Publication segment remained a stable contributor, with net sales of 8,767 million yen and an operating income of 2,042 million yen, marking a 9.4% increase in segment profit. The Merchandising segment also saw revenue growth, though operating income declined by 18%. As of December 31, 2012, the company maintained a consolidated equity ratio of 61.2%. Management continues to pivot toward digital and mobile platforms to address the evolving business environment and improve future profitability.
