Square Enix
Square Enix’s financial performance for the first half of the fiscal year ending September 30, 2005, reflects a period of strategic transition characterized by top-line growth alongside a significant contraction in profitability. While consolidated net sales rose to 27,091 million yen—an 11.1% increase over the prior year—operating income plummeted by 58.3% to 2,484 million yen. This divergence was driven by rising costs of sales and increased selling, general, and administrative expenses, coupled with mixed performance across core segments. Notably, the "Others" segment experienced a 229.4% surge in sales, bolstered by the success of Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, which helped offset declines in online gaming and publication revenue.
The primary driver of the company’s financial activity during this period was the acquisition of Taito Corporation. This strategic move, intended to diversify content distribution channels and expand into the arcade market, necessitated a substantial capital outflow of 52 billion yen. While the company maintained a robust cash position of 53 billion yen, the acquisition significantly impacted the balance sheet, increasing liabilities and contributing to a decline in net income to 2,200 million yen. Management remains committed to long-term performance targets, aiming for an operating profit ratio exceeding 20% and consistent growth in consolidated earnings per share.
Financial operations were further influenced by the adoption of new accounting standards regarding the impairment of non-current assets. This shift resulted in a 188 million yen reduction in pre-tax income, largely due to the write-down of idle land assets in Nagareyama and Tokushima. To mitigate financial risk, the company adheres to a conservative policy, limiting derivative transactions to foreign exchange forward contracts for hedging purposes and maintaining a structured approach to the amortization of goodwill. Despite the immediate pressure on margins, these measures underscore a focus on long-term stability and asset optimization.
