Square Enix
Square Enix experienced a challenging fiscal year ending March 31, 2008, characterized by a contraction in both top-line revenue and profitability. Consolidated net sales declined by 9.8 percent to 147.5 billion yen, while net income fell by 20.9 percent to 9.2 billion yen. Operating income also saw a reduction, settling at 21.5 billion yen. These results were primarily driven by significant downturns in the core Games segments, encompassing both offline and online titles, as well as a notable decline in mobile phone content revenue. While the Amusement and Others segments demonstrated signs of recovery and growth, these gains were insufficient to offset the broader weakness across the company’s primary digital entertainment divisions.
The international market proved particularly difficult during this period, with overseas sales dropping sharply from 37.6 billion yen to 22.4 billion yen. This contraction resulted in a decrease in the proportion of international revenue, which fell from 23.0 percent to 15.2 percent of total consolidated sales. This downward trend was consistent across all geographic regions, reflecting a broad-based struggle to maintain market share outside of Japan.
Despite these operational setbacks, the company maintained a robust financial foundation, concluding the fiscal year with 111.5 billion yen in cash and cash equivalents and total net assets of 148.2 billion yen. Looking toward the future, the organization initiated a strategic shift to transition into a pure holding company structure by October 2008. This structural reorganization is intended to streamline operations and facilitate a return to growth in the subsequent fiscal year, signaling a pivot toward long-term stability and improved performance.
