Create free account[Music] okay so I'm I'm I'm a game producer oh that's what's happy I've been mainly doing I have already roughly 40 40 40 games I've done with almost all platforms from triple-a to to mobile now I work work with fake fish it's a indie developer from Turku Finland we focus on PC games but we also have a couple of mobile titles as well I have a relatively big topic here but I can only talk talk about this from the perspective of an indie developer and and how we how we have started to do do this this community based game development with with with two two
titles I'm going to talk you know but first first sort of like a short introduction about about about sort of our communities and tribalism I wanted to add at this slide here bits because it's all always always called cool to start sort of like a lecture by saying that that that that like like the old Romans or in the ancient times so so historically in the individualism is really relatively new new new topic for example way back first about two thousand years ago during the Roman Empire there there they did not understand if there was not even world called in the individualism the people where individual people were defined by
the family where they came from and from the neighborhood where there where so so say saying saying that that I'm just keema curry did not mean any anything I would just be if I would not say that I'm part of curry family I am from Naraku then I started to mean something in back in the days actually but in the video realism as a word has was has been introduced in in late 1930s and it was actually first pseudonym synonym to pejorative so not a positive connotation and and now as we probably all know it's the sort of what they called an era of tribalism if you code to internet you will you will find a niche for almost
everything as a stupid thing you can you can innovate you will find from internet sort of like your tribe members for example here series that justified a statistic about about how many metal banister rubber there are 100,000 people and we should be here in a pretty red area and and for example many many of you probably has has heard about the cold pastafari Sigma so there is people who believe that or claim that God is a Flying Spaghetti Monster and it's a it's a big thing in Internet and and and and talking about talking about monsters it's it's now not sort of like good bridge to my sort of like main beef of this of this of this speech back in the day is I think seven years ago when when
one of our lead developers started alone game project he found this sort of SCP foundation this is sort of like relatively big phenomenon now resin internet have been there over a decade now and it's like hobby for for skillful writers they cope right and create monsters to a big database they have now I don't know five thousand or ten thousand monsters in that database and that's strictly created a sort of like community sort of like if you write that description of animal your master it's not it's not going to be on this side and they have all kind of folklore and and whatever things it's a big big sort
of like community that you can you can dig into later and there's also at Lee Anita spread also to China there's also big community of this in China and sort of like our little programmer unis unis unis freakin Rican actually built a game on top of these monsters because they are sort of a creative commons license so you can you can use them and just just of just for fun show you one stuff like video they are mainly in written format but but then you have sort of like videos about the monsters that the top trendy squarest monsters in SCP blah blah blah and this this has 70 million views so it's like it's like pretty pretty big big community come has sound 1 3 8 2 is a Red Sea Marc water boy floating on the surface of Lake
Michigan um air and sea traffic must be redirected away from containment site although scp-1325 structural damage during its lifetime it still stands tall occasionally flashing out the SOS distress signal in Morse code in 10-second intervals this mysterious boy is anchored to a downed airliner lying deep beneath the surface of the water named flight 441 this derelict aircraft contains the skeletal remains of 56 passengers and crew members who begin to animate obtaining their natural body temperature of 37 point zero degrees Celsius as registered by thermal imaging scanners and assume into the crash position in their seats after 13 seconds of activity all instances of passengers turn to face scp-1307 till scp-1307 eart
it has been reported that the passengers are distressed due to the accounts before the crash as opposed to the crash itself implying that every passenger is stuck in some kind of yep so it's it's full of amazingly weird stuff my favorite monster is actually a Kia when you go in you can never go out there even leave the population inside that animal using these monsters or such just just tiny part of the monsters that could fit a certain type of game mechanic one of our our programmers had developed a game and and he actually first first first did the prototype and
he just for fun put it put it on on on on on some community sites like like 4chan read edits to have some feedback but then he started to receive a lot of like 3d assets and a lot of like country like like real contribution so it ended up to be sort of like more like collaborative work so he he's like a sort of like open source guy so he put all the source code to give the gift hub and and then this development of this game ended up being a core development of 50 people even though the programmer was sort of like alone in Finland in Toorak about 50 other people were actively developing the game and and of course of course they're the result also ended up to be pretty scary and and fun
it has charged when it was published in 2012 in top 50 list of new PC games in position 22 so so really nice reviews and and also also what helped to explore the that the game's popularity was also that when many many many youtubers also far found found it and played it and their posts post sort of like this funny beanie videos where they where they are scared of the of the of the events if it's ever in the game and they got sort of like ten tens of millions views this type of videos and and it ended up ended up so that this game without any marketing efforts got more than ten million downloads so so so so here is actually actually he didn't
even have to make the game trailers himself here's one short trailer made by a fan [Applause]
and yep a little afraid don't be afraid so so now I switched the project that we are currently co-developing which community it's it's it's a submarine game located in space actually in in in one moon of Jupiter called called Europa and Arabah has C and as of course a lot of monsters and aliens and and this this game differs quite a lot gameplay wise the previous game and and and also also it's it's that's pretty different that from day one it has been also said to be
sort of like a commercial product so the previous game was a was a was totally totally free free free game but but but this is this is open open source but what but still a commercial project I will show you a short trailer but about this game it starts again [Music] so it's like FTL Apple authority in space insurance but if game it's it's sort of like multiplayer co-op game where you need to manage submarine there are different sort of like roles in the in the in in the sub and even a trader mode and like Heil Moodle game if you want
you can build your submarine yourself but if you build a submarine then you need also to build the electricity system and you can go really deep into that there's even one hardcore fan that has built a computer out of the electricity system and played Tetris inside that game so Rebecca pretty deep and it sort of this is what Thursday cloned character this we like a lot of dislike funny and crazy crazy things happening happening happening in the game as well it's possible all the other sort of like the levels are positively generated lot of physics and stuff this is something that we hopefully end up releasing officially in next six months but
[Music] and here's if you're going to build the submarine there so editor for that and there is now even an editor to build monsters as well so that the game is not yet officially launched but it has already 100,000 downloads it's like six secretly in open alpha bill you can you can find from the developers sort of phyto per personal website and then the source code is in in the github this is just a brief brief summary about about the main main main features and you know this is just an example of the of the user interface so with its it
it's pretty hardcore game and it's it is all it's also sort of like can pc as a platform how you can create a very different type of game experience for you your yourself and your friends there are it's funny to see how how differently people people play the game [Music] and this is this is already what is happening even though the game is not yet launched we have we have sort of like players in youtubers like freakin - who is like I think usually on Friday as having a couple of beers with with with his friends sort of like a role playing the game they are they are void on and they're sort of like role-playing it's in a very very funny way and they are like he posed for us like pretty popular
videos like almost 1 1 million views and and that's great and at the moment we also also also have a forum where the sort of like the core development happens and there is all sort of like thousands and thousands of posts of new ideas features and and stuff like that compared to the previous game I have to say that there is there is less people who are really sort of like hands on developing the game I I think it's it's due to that that it's it's much more complex game so it takes a while to get familiar with with the codebase and also that this is meant to be a commercial product as well so so probably everyone is not you know willing to code free for someone else commercial project but but anyway we have we have also really genius coders coop coders all over the world also also they did develop in the game there is
also now a PvP mode available we haven't ourself they develop sort of like the PvP multiplayer but but but the community has has done it already [Music] yes that I think I have I can say about this in such a short time because it is of course how to manage the community and and and and and the core development is this is a matter of couple of PhD studies so that's what I can tell in 15 minutes just scratching the surface what thank you we went over time a little bit but I wanted to ask if someone wants to ask questions least one or two questions we could do mikail is in very good mood and very relaxed so that that's easy
hi yes very good speech there I want to ask about the SCP that have you seen much about it that they can play multiplayer and RCP if you have have you thought about making the SCP multiplayer there are plenty of mods available and there are now people who are totally record attacked game someone is doing it to C++ warning supporting that to unity and and so forth I have not myself found a PvP multiplayer game and and I think one of the reasons that it probably is not perhaps a good idea is that is that this game tries to be really scary and and and it's sort of like the multiplayer might ruin the scariness of the after of the game because it's probably better that the AI is controlling the monsters I have seen
that some youtuber play a multiplayer a CP that some of them are the ICB monster some of the human army CP team games made made but but probably it's not the more to this game I believe we have also of course also implants after we finished a submarine game to actually actually go back to the SCP and make a make a make a sequel to that and then probably add multiplayer there yeah thank you very much thank you guys thank you [Applause] [Music]
Community-based game development leverages the power of internet tribalism to foster collaborative, high-engagement projects. By tapping into existing niche communities—such as the SCP Foundation, a vast database of collaborative horror fiction—developers can utilize established lore and creative assets to build games with built-in audiences. This approach shifts the development model from a solitary or studio-centric process to a decentralized, open-source framework where community members contribute code, 3D assets, and gameplay features, effectively acting as an extended, global development team.
Case studies of this model demonstrate significant organic reach and longevity. One project, based on the SCP Foundation, achieved over 10 million downloads without traditional marketing, driven largely by viral content from YouTubers and active community participation. A subsequent project, a submarine simulation game set on Jupiter’s moon Europa, further illustrates this potential. Despite being in an open alpha state, the game garnered 100,000 downloads and fostered a deep level of player engagement, with users creating complex in-game systems, such as functional computers built from electrical components, and developing their own PvP modes.
The methodology relies on transparency and accessibility, often utilizing platforms like GitHub to host source code and forums to manage feature requests and development discussions. While the complexity of a commercial project can influence the level of direct code contribution compared to free, open-source titles, the community remains a vital source of innovation and quality assurance. Ultimately, this development strategy transforms players into stakeholders, creating a symbiotic relationship that enhances game depth and ensures a dedicated user base long before an official commercial launch.
